A los veinte años fundó su propia orquesta. En 1914 se convirtió en director de orquesta residente en el prestigioso Hotel Adlon. A principios de la década de 1920, él y su orquesta comenzaron a realizar grabaciones, primero para Carl Lindström Company (bajo el sello «Parlophon») y luego para Deutsche Grammophon. En 1926 se trasladó a la recién formada Electrola y permaneció con este sello durante el resto de su carrera en Alemania. Durante este período fue uno de los artistas discográficos más destacados de Alemania, a la par de Paul Godwin, Efim Schachmeister, Ben Berlin y Dajos Béla.
